Article 1:

Are You Always Alone?

One of the worst things we can do when suffering from anxiety is to be alone. When we are alone our thoughts run wild and increase our worry which leads to stronger anxiety and panic. Did you know a pet can help ease your pain? Having a pet with you can calm your nerves and relieve stress. Pets such as dogs and cats give us unconditional love and acceptance.

Article 2:

Seek Medical Advice from Your Doctor

It is not uncommon for a person to seek medical help when suffering from anxiety/panic attacks for the first time, for example (an emergency room visit).

Before starting any self help activities a medical evaluation should be completed by your family Doctor. Explain what symptoms you have been experiencing, frequency of these symptoms, and time of day and duration of symptoms to assist your doctor in making a proper diagnosis. It is also important to discuss any medications you are currently taking and/or changes in medications you have recently had. Other important areas to discuss are sleeping and eating habits. Inform your Doctor of length and quality of sleep, any fluctuations in routine (re: shift work), sleeping aids (re: medications). As pertain to diet key areas should include (caffeine intake and smoking habits) and any exercise regime you are currently engaging in. It is important to be honest with your doctor and inform them of any drug use/misuse including street drugs (marijuana, cocaine etc.) and frequency of same. A brief checklist below summarizes important areas to discuss with your visit:

Checklist

Symptoms you are experiencing (frequency, severity, duration, time of day)

Current medications being taken

Current diet (caffeine intake, alcohol consumption, blood sugar levels

Exercise regime

Predisposing factors (stressful situation or combination of stressors) altered sleeping patterns, work related stressors, family issue, etc.

Smoking

Illicit drug use

Summary

By completing a visit to your family doctor he/she may be able to rule out any medical issues that may be causing your symptoms. It is important to be honest and thorough to ensure you get a well rounded, complete assessment of your current health.
